Job Description

Prepares plant selection, care and maintenance programs for campus green spaces, greenhouses, lawns, trees, shrubs, and other plant material and directs the work of those completing these programs. Supervises greenhouse operations. Assists with preparation of landscape designs and may be assigned to manage landscape projects. Conducts inspections and assessments of plant materials. Participates in budget activities for area or responsibility. Supervises direct report staff. Participates in Tree Campus Higher Education Committee planning and events.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree in Horticulture or a closely related field.
2. One (1) year (12 months) of work experience in s supervisory capacity in landscape construction or maintenance.
3. Must complete a post-offer pre-employment physical. Employment is contingent on the successful results of the physical.

Desired Qualifications
1. Must have a valid State of Illinois driver’s license
2. Knowledge of planting, care and maintenance of lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers including chemical applications, inspection, and assessment of plants.
3. Experience developing design plans for greenspaces.
4. Eligibility for licensure to apply pesticides under the Illinois Pesticide Act, the category of the license depending on the nature of the work to be performed; the license must be obtained within the probationary period
5. Knowledge of and previous experience supervising greenhouse operations.
6. Experience with the tools and equipment required to successfully perform job duties.
7. Project management experience in supervising landscape projects of varying sizes.
8. Experience in preparing budgets for Grounds projects, annual planting needs and purchase or replacement of equipment.
9. Strong communication skills in order to interact with the general public as well as other University personnel.


Salary

$28.00-29.00/hour

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
