Job Description

Though this position does not regularly initiate financial transactions, its primary purpose is to coordinate, review, and approve or deny requests for project-related expenditures in consultation with the ISU Principal Investigator (PI) and Fiscal Agent. The Award Manager works on behalf of PIs and Fiscal Agents to proactively provide a high level of customer service to manage external funding. Some specific duties include:

- Reviews and approves transactions to ensure compliance with university and sponsor regulations and policies.

- Schedules and holds regular meetings with PIs and fiscal agents to discuss the project and expenditures related to the work.

- Provides monthly reports of all grant and contract accounts and as needed meets with departments, fiscal agents, and PI's to communicate necessary changes in fiscal management.

- Responsible for fiscal management of grants and contracts which includes monitoring expenses, approving vouchers, authorizing salary to be charged to a grant or contract, and approving external procurement of services.

- Consults with Risk Management, General Counsel, Human Resources, and other University offices as appropriate in regards to grant management.

- Advises and monitors matters regarding RSP's compliance responsibilities.

- Maintains expertise on University policies (Payroll, Human Resources, Accounting, Budget Office, Risk Management, and Comptroller's Office) and federal and state regulations, as well as policies and procedures for externally sponsored projects.

- Researches, interprets, and applies regulations and guidelines effectively in sponsored projects throughout the award lifecycle to ensure University compliance.

- Trains RSP personnel on compliance issues that impact research and post-award management.

- Develops training materials and provides workshops and one-on-one training for faculty, fiscal agents, and professional staff.

- Coordinates close-out procedures on behalf of the fiscal agent and PI.


Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, finance, economics, or a field related to the position.

2. Any combination totaling three (3) years from the following categories:
(a) additional college course work at graduate level in any field, measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
-30 semester hours or Master's degree equals one year
(b) progressively more responsible work experience directly related to grant and contracts services, such as funding, proposal writing and review, administration, or compliance experience
(c) one (1) year experience managing project level funding at an institution of higher education.

3. Ability to exercise discretion and judgment in sensitive and potentially controversial matters.

4. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

5. Ability to work independently.

You may not begin work until the criminal background investigation results have been received and cleared by Human Resources.
