Job Description

Police Officers at Eastern Illinois University safeguard lives and property by enforcing applicable laws and regulations and promoting good university/community relations. They work under general supervision of higher-level personnel. The typical duties of a Police Officer include: patrols assigned post, investigates incidents, makes arrests, investigates violations of State statutes, city and county ordinances and university regulations; conducts investigations as required, submits reports to supervisors, directs vehicle and pedestrian traffic and enforces parking and traffic rules and regulations; investigates and reports unusual conditions that might endanger the public safety; assists other agencies during emergencies.

Eastern Illinois University in Charleston periodically conducts the Physical Fitness Test for the Police Officer classification. The university is planning to conduct the next Physical Fitness Test on May 02, 2026 beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Candidates must be Illinois residents; be a high school graduate or equivalent; possess a valid driver’s license; have no record of conviction of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude; be eligible for bonding; be at least 21 years of age upon employment; and be able to complete the Basic Law Enforcement Officers Training Course.

Eligible candidates should apply at https://www.eiu.edu/~humanres/application/login.php in order to be contacted for the next available Police Officer Physical Fitness Testing. Successful candidates must also pass a knowledge exam, as well as oral boards.
