Job Description

The Office of Inclusion and Academic Engagement Program Coordinator will report to the Dean of Student Success. This position will work closely with Student Success Directors, Enrollment Management, and Admissions. The Program Coordinator takes a leadership role in the department's strategic plan and works collaboratively wth other campus-wide academic and student support areas.  The Program Coordinator is responsible for establishing rapport, problem-solving, and providing a broad range of services to ensure students achieve successful outcomes at Eastern Illinois University.

Function of Job: Provide supportive services to assist EIU students in being academically successful through mentorship and specific outreach to promote academic success. This is a 12-month position working with our Student Success areas.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Has administrative oversight of the Freshman Connection Program,  providing resource development and improving academic success for students in the program;
Responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating the S.T.R.O.N.G. MENtoring Program for men of color
Assign & train Peer Mentors to implement best practices when working with students
Support University Foundations including being assigned a section(s) as needed
Supervise GAs and interns (hire and train graduate assistants and interns to offer mentorship and to counsel undergraduate students);
Develop and maintain a cooperative relationship with the faculty, advisors, and other support providers;
Track assessment data to determine the success of programs and write annual reports;
Participate in SSC staff meetings and collaborate with colleagues within SSC and the University;
Coordinate activities, educational programming, and events for a caseload of students to increase student engagement
Create and facilitate workshops; lead activities in a variety of topics including, but not limited to, academic, social, career, personal, financial, and cultural development;
Recruit participants and maintain communication and relationships through our many avenues of recruitment: Open House, Summer Orientation, Pantherpalooza, the Minority Faculty/Staff/Student Reception, campus conferences, etc.;
Participate in professional development opportunities by attending appropriate conferences, advising organizations, and serving on committees.


Qualifications

Requirements:

At least 3 years’ experience and Bachelor’s degree are required from a regionally accredited college or university in College Student Affairs, Counseling, Business Management, Education, or a related area. A Master’s degree in one of the above areas is preferred.
Additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization: Must have experience working with Underrepresented, Low-income, First-Generation, and Disabled students.

Preferred Qualification:

Experience working with computerized programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint. Experience with or ability to learn Banner and StudentAccess database systems;
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Must be open-minded, non-judgmental, and able to interact with, advise, and advocate for diverse groups;
Excellent oral and written communications skills;
Experience in advising students of diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds is strongly preferred;
Knowledge of and experience working with low-income, first-generation and/or underserved student populations;
Experience working with other educational programs that serve and support first-generation, low-income, and/or under-served student populations is strongly preferred;
Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense;
Ability to develop goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work;
Ability to work effectively with staff, students, the public, and outside constituency groups;
Ability to motivate, engage, and encourage students to seek guidance and participate in the program;
Ability to effectively plan, delegate, and supervise the work of others;
Ability to work independently and as a member of a team and exercise sound judgment.

Comments Compensation

Salary based on experience. The position includes health benefits, vacation, sick time, and retirement benefits as provided by SURS.


The Civil Service Examination for this classification is a credentials assessment. No participation other than the submission of applicant materials is required from qualified applicants.  Upon successful selection of a candidate, all scores will be voided from this register.
