Job Description
This position is responsible for instrument maintenance in the Chemistry Department. Primary duties include: perform repairs or schedule service calls as necessary with instrument manufacturers, conduct preventative maintenance on departmental instruments, and perform liquid helium and liquid nitrogen fills on the NMR Spectrometers.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
1. Any one, or any combination, of the following types of preparation:
(a) credit for 24 semester hours of college course work in electronics, electrical power, physics, stress analysis, optics, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, physical measurements associated with any of the physical sciences, differential calculus, integral calculus, and/or differential equations
(b) 24 months of experience in the repair and maintenance of optical, hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, and/or electronic instruments and/or computer equipment
(c) 24 months of industrial, military, and/or technical school training in a field related to instrument and measurement work.
Desired Qualifications
1. M.S. degree with experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and operating a wide variety of chemical instrumentation and computer software.
2. Demonstrated aptitude for troubleshooting a variety of chemical instrumentation, including gas and liquid chromatographs, mass spectrometers, spectrophotometers, diffractometers, magnetic resonance spectrometers, etc.
3. Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize repair and maintenance tasks, communicate effectively with corporate instrument support engineers and coordinate instrument repairs and installations.
4. Excellent communication skills.
5. Ability to work constructively with faculty, staff, students, and other users of instrumentation.
6. Ability to work proactively, making judgments regarding repairs and routine maintenance required to keep the instruments in optimal operating condition.
7. Experience operating a wide variety of chemical instrumentation.
8. Willingness to be consulted during evenings and weekends for urgent instrumentation issues, including power failures affecting the instruments.
9. Customer service orientation.
Salary
$18.67 - $24.26 per hour
