Job Description

The Laboratory Schools are a service unit of the College of Education of Illinois State University, made up of Thomas Metcalf School Pre-K through 8 and University High School. The unit offers a comprehensive program of instruction for 1000+ students, including HILIA programs for students with low incidence disabilities for hearing and vision. Its mission is to act as a model for educational methods and theory in support of the preparation for future educators, conduct educational research, offer quality educational programs for children, and disseminate information to others in the educational profession.

This position for an Educational Interpreter will provide interpreter services to students 3-21 years that are deaf and/or hard of hearing. Placement at Thomas Metcalf School or University High School is dependent upon student need and can change from year to year.

This position is subject to summer academic break layoff, mid-May through mid-August.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications

1. High school graduation or GED

2. For public school pre K-12 Educational Interpreters, Statement of approval from the Illinois State Board of Education which shall be identified as valid for sign language interpreting pursuant to 23 IL Administrative Code Section 250.550 "including Interim approval".

Desired Qualifications

1. Willingness to be flexible with work assignments and schedule.

2. Ability to transition quickly between classrooms throughout the building in a timely manner.


Salary

$20.59-$26.78 per hour

If you have current licensure as an Advanced Proficiency Level or Master Proficiency Level Interpreter, then a copy of your license should be submitted prior to the application deadline in order to receive full consideration. This license can either be uploaded with your application or submitted via the options listed below.

In order to be eligible for Veteran's Preference points on the exam, a copy of your DD-214 must be submitted prior to the application deadline.

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
