Job Description
The Lab School Nurse is a district-wide nurse who in responsible for coordinating and overseeing the health services provided by Illinois State University Laboratory Schools (PK-12). This includes physicals, immunizations, and dental reporting to ISBE as well as consultation on and delivery of 504 medical services, and coordinating medical protocols and schedules, etc.
This individual must make judgments on a daily basis which must be based on professional knowledge and legal requirements, while being responsive to the needs of a student population of approximately 1050 PK-12 students, and sound educational health practices in the school setting. This individual must understand and have the ability to interact with all levels of school age children and their parents and teachers.
This person must utilize knowledge of the legal responsibility of the school regarding health requirements for students and be prepared to educate student, staff, and parents of these legal responsibilities. Guidelines for the school nurse are defined by the Illinois Nurse Practice Act, Illinois State Board of Education, and Illinois Department of Public Health. Responsibilities and legal limitations are determined using documentation from these sources.
This position is subject to summer academic break layoff, beginning of June through early August.
The ISU Laboratory Schools are a service unit of the College of Education of Illinois State University. They offer a comprehensive program of instruction for 400+ students in grades PreK-12. Their mission is to act as a model for educational methods and theory in support of the preparation of future educators, conduct educational research, offer quality educational programs for children, and disseminate information to others in the educational profession.
Qualifications
Required:
1. Licensure as a Registered Professional nurse in Illinois with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
2. One (1) year of professional nursing experience.
3. Certified in CPR
If this position is Security Sensitive or if you are subject to a criminal background investigation based on University policy, then employment is contingent upon you passing a satisfactory criminal background investigation. You may not begin work until the criminal background investigation results have been received and cleared by Human Resources.
Desired:
1. School nurse Certification PEL-CSN
2. Awareness of available community resources.
3. Knowledge of ISBE and IDPH requirements and recommendations of health issues and records in the school setting.
4. Effective communication skills with students, staff, and parents.
5. Ability to make professionally-based judgments within the legal realm of nursing.
6. Possesses basic computer knowledge and capable of data entry of student record information.
7. Possesses ability to access and administer basic first aid.
8. Current AED Certification.
Salary
$20.29 - $26.38 per hour
