Series Narrative

Employees in this series perform and/or supervise fieldwork needed for the maintenance and construction/modification of a golf course (greens, tees, fairways, roads, and paths), as well as the preventive maintenance and repair of mechanical or motorized equipment used in the maintenance and construction/modification of the course.

 

DESCRIPTIONS OF LEVELS OF WORK

 

Level I:  Greens Worker 2007(4246)

Employees at this level perform fieldwork needed for the maintenance of the turf and soil of the golf course and related areas; assist in the construction/modification of such areas; and perform preventive maintenance and repair of mechanical/motorized equipment. They work under direct supervision from a designated supervisor.

 

A Greens Worker typically

 

1.   mows and trims grass of golf course and related areas (greens, tees, fairways, and roughs) according to established schedules

 

2.   rakes and adds sand to traps

 

3.   maintains soil and turf of greens and tees (such as applying fertilizers; applying herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides; top dressing; sodding; and drainage)

 

4.   maintains irrigation system of golf course (such as checking sprinkler head rotation, water distribution, leaks, or pressure losses and repairing electrical solenoids)

 

5.   maintains such mechanical/motorized equipment as lawn mowers and tractors

 

6.   performs field work required in the construction or modification of greens, fairways, paths, and golf course roadways; may assist in the installation of irrigation or drainage systems

 

7.   plants, replaces, and prunes trees and shrubs on the golf course or related areas

 

8.   performs related duties as assigned

 

 

Level II:  Greens Supervisor 3509

Employees at this level are either working supervisors of persons performing golf course grounds maintenance duties on large courses (such as those with 18 or more holes), who work under general supervision from persons responsible for the entire golf course grounds maintenance program; or experienced greens workers responsible for the entire grounds maintenance program of smaller golf courses (such as those with 9 holes), who work under general supervision from persons responsible for managing the entire golf course operation.

 

A Greens Supervisor typically

 

1.   assigns to subordinate greens workers and/or performs golf course grounds maintenance and equipment maintenance work in accordance with schedules

 

2.   develops work schedules for the maintenance of golf course grounds and related areas and the maintenance of associated mechanical/motorized equipment in accordance with guidelines from supervisor

 

3.   trains subordinates; evaluates completed work; interviews and recommends hiring of new subordinates

 

4.   prepares records and reports as required

 

5.   gives practical advice on layout to supervisor when greens, tees, fairways, rough, sand traps, paths, or roadways are being planned or modified; supervises and/or performs on-site construction/renovation work

 

6.   enforces and/or carries out state, university, or manufacturer's safety regulations or instructions

 

7.   evaluates condition of grounds maintenance equipment and recommends replacement when needed

 

8.   opens and closes the golf course as authorized

 

9.   performs related duties as assigned

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES NEEDED TO UNDERTAKE JOB

 

1.   ability to perform hard physical labor and to stand and walk for extended periods of time

 

2.   ability to learn and apply safety precautions or rules associated with grounds maintenance duties

 

3.   ability to follow verbal and written instructions

 

4.   ability to cooperate and communicate with members of the university community and golf course patrons

 

 

Level II:  Greens Supervisor 3509

 

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER

 

1.  three years of work experience comparable to that described at the lower level of this series. (Credit for college course work in fields directly related to turf management[1] may be substituted for up to two of the three years of experience, on the basis of one semester hour of credit being equivalent to 0.5 months of work experience.)
