Series Narrative

Employees in this series perform and/or supervise the installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of a variety of electronic broadcasting equipment and circuitry in support of the operation of radio and/or television stations.

 

DESCRIPTIONS OF LEVELS OF WORK

 

Level I:  Broadcasting Engineer 1316

Employees at this level install, repair, and maintain radio/television equipment and operate radio/television equipment. They work under general supervision from a designated supervisor.

A Broadcasting Engineer typically

 

1.   maintains and operates transmitters; may maintain and operate related broadcast equipment

 

2.   installs equipment and equipment systems

 

3.   performs routine maintenance on equipment and equipment systems

 

4.   performs equipment repair

 

5.   assures that all equipment is working at its maximum capability

 

6.   monitors technical signals and makes recommendations for improvement

 

7.   provides leadership for students and/or other staff

 

8.   fabricates equipment as appropriate

 

9.   may operate studio and control room equipment as required

 

10.   performs other related duties as assigned

 

 


Level II:  Assistant Chief Broadcasting Engineer 1320

Employees at this level supervise the installation, operation, and maintenance of radio and/or television equipment and the work of the technical staff, including engineers and operators. They work under direction from a designated supervisor.

 

An Assistant Chief Broadcasting Engineer typically

 

1.   assigns, supervises, and evaluates the work of the engineering staff

 

2.   installs, operates, and maintains radio and/or television broadcasting equipment

 

3.   makes recommendations on the purchase of equipment

 

4.   assists in planning future developments and expansion

 

5.   keeps abreast of new and continuing developments in the field of broadcast engineering

 

6. is responsible for one or more of the engineering areas (such as studio operations, maintenance, transmitter, etc.)

 

7.   may work with management and program personnel in the development of production techniques

 

8.   performs other related duties as assigned

 

 

Level III: Chief Broadcasting Engineer 1319

Employees at this level are responsible for the technical maintenance, operation, and efficiency of a radio and/or television station(s). They work under administrative supervision from a designated supervisor.

 

A Chief Broadcasting Engineer typically

 

1.   is responsible for the technical maintenance and operation of one or more radio and/or television stations

 

2.   trains student operators and engineers

 

3.   assigns, supervises, and evaluates the work of the engineering staff

 

4.   supervises the development, testing, and construction of new equipment

 

5.   installs, operates, and maintains radio and/or television broadcasting equipment

 

6.   assists in planning future developments and expansion

 

7.   keeps abreast of new and continuing developments in the field of broadcast engineering

 

8.   supervises the set-up of remote broadcast units

 

9.   carries on technical radio and/or television research

 

10.   is responsible for requisitioning supplies and equipment

 

11.   supervises recording service

 

12.   works with management and program personnel in the development of production techniques

 

13.   performs other related duties as assigned

 

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR ENTRY INTO:

 

Level I:  Broadcasting Engineer 1316

 

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER

 

1.   high school graduation or equivalent

 

2.   (A)   credit for 60 semester hours of college course work, with a minimum of 30 semester hours in electrical engineering or electronics

 

or

 

(B)   Associate degree in electronics or radio/television engineering

 

or

 

(C)   successful completion of a trade or vocational school program in electronics or radio/television engineering lasting two academic years

 

or

 

(D)   18 months of experience in radio and television engineering or television engineering

 

or

 

(E)   any combination of A D that totals 18 months

 

NOTE: Certification as a Broadcast Technologist (or higher category of certification) by the Society of Broadcast Engineers can be used to satisfy all the credential requirements of this class, if accepted by the employing institution.

 

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES NEEDED TO UNDERTAKE JOB

 

1.   knowledge of equipment generally used in radio/television broadcasting

 

2.   knowledge of radio frequency systems, analog and digital circuitry, and computer applications in electronics

 

3.   knowledge of electronics circuitry test equipment

 

4.   skill in the use of precision hand tools

Level II:  Assistant Chief Broadcasting Engineer 1320

 

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER

 

1.   high school graduation or equivalent

 

2.   (A)   four academic years of progressively more advanced training in electrical or electronic technology/engineering in a college, university, or trade school

 

or

 

(B)   36 months of progressively responsible work experience in radio and television engineering or television engineering

 

or

 

(C)   any combination of A and B that totals 36 months

 

3.   18 months of responsible work experience in radio and television engineering or television engineering

 

NOTE: Certification as a Broadcast Engineer (or higher category of certification) by the Society of Broadcast Engineers can be used to satisfy all the credential requirements of this class, if accepted by the employing institution.

 

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES NEEDED TO UNDERTAKE JOB

1.   (A)   four academic years of progressively more advance training in electrical or electronic technology/engineering in a college, university, and/or trade school

 

or

 

(B)   36 months of progressively responsible work experience in radio and television engineering or television engineering

 

or

 

(C)   any combination of A and B that totals 36 months

 

2.   three years of responsible experience in radio and television engineering or television engineering

 

NOTE: Certification as a Senior Broadcast Engineer (or higher category of certification) by the Society of Broadcast Engineers can be used to satisfy all the credential requirements of the class, if accepted by the employing institution.
