Function of Job
Under general physician supervision, provides healthcare services and treatment to patients in a medical facility.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
A(n) Nurse Practitioner typically -
- elicits complete health and medical histories; assesses social history and family history.
- performs physical examinations and preventive health measures within recommended guidelines.
- orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient’s clinical problems and healthcare needs.
- formulates healthcare plan and prognosis based on patient’s condition; implements medical therapy; prescribes or recommends drugs or other forms of treatment such as physical therapy, inhalation therapy, or other appropriate treatment program; collaborates as needed with physician.
- provides general medical care and treatment to patients, differentiating between the well and sick or abnormal; initiates treatment when appropriate, referring those patients who require services outside scope of practice.
- therapeutically treats common disease states, with responsibility for identifying health care needs; recognizes changes in symptoms that may require changes in therapy; formulates healthcare plans and prognosis that specify health problems, approaches, and objectives; implements and evaluates plan with patient and family.
- provides care of acutely ill patient by recognizing syndromes; provides primary emergency care as appropriate; utilizes patient's physical and emotional responses to therapy to institute and implement medical treatment.
- trains, supervises, and guides other members of health care team in the development, implementation, and evaluation of health care plan.
- collaborates with health care professionals and ancillary members in determining care, treatment, and general management of patients.
- collaborates and/or develops unit/clinic policy and procedures, protocols, goals and objectives and assists in day-to-day operation.
- performs related duties as assigned.
