Function of Job

Under general physician supervision, provides healthcare services and treatment to patients in a medical facility.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

A(n) Nurse Practitioner typically -

  1. elicits complete health and medical histories; assesses social history and family history.
  2. performs physical examinations and preventive health measures within recommended guidelines.
  3. orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient’s clinical problems and healthcare needs.
  4. formulates healthcare plan and prognosis based on patient’s condition; implements medical therapy; prescribes or recommends drugs or other forms of treatment such as physical therapy, inhalation therapy, or other appropriate treatment program; collaborates as needed with physician.
  5. provides general medical care and treatment to patients, differentiating between the well and sick or abnormal; initiates treatment when appropriate, referring those patients who require services outside scope of practice.
  6. therapeutically treats common disease states, with responsibility for identifying health care needs; recognizes changes in symptoms that may require changes in therapy; formulates healthcare plans and prognosis that specify health problems, approaches, and objectives; implements and evaluates plan with patient and family.
  7. provides care of acutely ill patient by recognizing syndromes; provides primary emergency care as appropriate; utilizes patient's physical and emotional responses to therapy to institute and implement medical treatment.
  8. trains, supervises, and guides other members of health care team in the development, implementation, and evaluation of health care plan.
  9. collaborates with health care professionals and ancillary members in determining care, treatment, and general management of patients.
  10. collaborates and/or develops unit/clinic policy and procedures, protocols, goals and objectives and assists in day-to-day operation.
  11. performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER

  1. Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse
    225 ILCS 65 et seq.
