Job Description
General Summary
The primary function of the Laboratory Mechanic is to install, repair, and maintain laboratory equipment used in the Department of Technology. This position works with faculty to design and fabricate laboratory apparatus to promote efficient hands-on learning by students in various laboratories, procure materials and equipment, and maintain a documented preventive maintenance program. The Technician manages a wide variety of tasks and responsibilities, including property inventory and control in the Technology Department.
Additional Information
The Department of Technology serves approximately 600 majors in six undergraduate degree programs and three graduate sequences of study, with approximately 20 faculty members, five staff members, and various numbers of graduate assistants and student employees.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
1. High school graduation or equivalent.
2. Any combination totaling four (4) years (48 months)
(a). Successful completion of a machinist apprentice (or in a closely related program) in an approved training program or in a training program established by an employer served by the State Universities Civil Service System.
(b). Work experience comparable to that performed at the Assistant Laboratory Mechanic level of this series or in other positions of comparable responsibility. This works includes semi-skilled and unskilled work involved in the fabrication, operation, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and tools.
(c). College course work in welding, electrical/electronics, HVAC, industrial/technology machining or manufacturing area or a closely related field.
- 30 semester hours equals to one (1) year (12 months).
- 60 semester hours (or an Associate's degree) equals to two (2) years (24 months).
Desired Qualifications
1. Bachelor's Degree in industrial technology.
2. Strong interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
3. Ability to work with faculty, staff, and student to solve technical problems.
4. Ability to work independently and set own schedule and priorities based upon the needs of the department.
5. Willing and able to learn new technical skills.
6. Knowledge of and skill in troubleshooting a wide assortment of mechanical, electrical, electronic (analog and digital), and pneumatic computer controlled machines, tools, instruments, and test equipment associated with industrial technology laboratories.
7. Skills and knowledge of the performance of routine and preventative maintenance of equipment.
8. Ability to read and understand technical literature/manuals and apply information to the installation, repair, and maintenance of equipment.
9. Knowledge of safe work practices and disposal of hazardous materials.
10. Ability to follow instructions and work from blueprints, construction drawings, shop drawings, sketches, and diagrams.
Salary
$18.67 - $24.26/hour
