Job Description
A Network Engineer I typically:
1. Supports systems that are composed of multiple product suites (e.g, Access Layer, Aggregate layer, CORE networks, Data Center networks, Wireless, VoIP, etc…)
2. Works with more advanced network security tools and devices (e.g, Firewalls, Intrusion Detection and/or Prevention Systems)
3. Tests and develops integration of multiple networking hardware and software products and architectures
4. Performs research in support of the architecture that the network infrastructure products are implemented or being evaluated for
5. Coordinates the troubleshooting efforts and resolution of problems relating to the product suites for which responsible
6. Reviews reports regarding network deficiencies, possible issues, and faults and addresses or informs higher-level engineers if outside of current knowledge
7. Manage all aspects of assigned projects, with general supervision and review
8. Assists other campus technical staff with problems or configuration issues relating to network products and environment
9. Provides training on network products and environment to other technical and support staff
10. Continue to expand knowledge into other network areas (e.g, Aggregate layer, CORE networks, Data Center networks, Wireless, VoIP, etc…)
11. Performs duties outlined in all lower levels of this series as required
12. Performs other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited academic institution in Computer Science or a closely related field
2. A minimum of one (1) year of hands on experience maintaining an enterprise network environment as an ITTA-Network Administrator II in the last five (5) years
3. Any combination totaling two (2) years of experience and knowledge from the following categories:
A. Progressively more responsible hands on experience maintaining an enterprise network environment as an ITTA-Network Administrator II in the last five (5) years. Counted on a per month basis.
I. Professional Development, as measured by the following conversion table:
1. Networking Certificates (Current within the last two (2) years)
- JNCIS, or equivalent
- CCNP, JNCIP, or equivalent
2. Project Management Certificates (Current within the last two (2) years)
- CAPM, PPM, or equivalent
- PMP, MPM, or equivalent
