Safety/Environmental Compliance Specialist

Function of Job

Employees in this classification assist in the development and implementation of safety, environmental or related compliance program elements. They work under the administrative and technical direction of designated administrators and technical leaders.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

A(n) Safety/Environmental Compliance Specialist typically -

  1. inspects or evaluates facilities, work areas, equipment, materials, and processes for compliance with environmental, safety and/or compliance codes, standards or regulations;
  2. performs testing, sampling or surveys of equipment, materials or environments;
  3. consults and assists unit personnel on environmental, safety and/or compliance procedures, policies, standards or regulations;
  4. collects and maintains documentation and records of activities;
  5. compiles results, findings and other data associated with established metrics;
  6. evaluates and develops data management procedures, resources and tools;
  7. develops content including guidance documents, webpages, and training;
  8. assists in the development of policies and procedures that ensures compliance with environmental, safety and/or compliance codes, standards or regulations;
  9. assists in communications with local, state, and federal agencies to facilitate facility, unit or campus compliance with codes, standards or regulations;
  10. participates in campus committees related to environmental, safety and/or compliance as needed;
  11. performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER

  1. Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, environmental engineering, environmental health, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field.
  2. One (1) year (12 months) of professional work experience in a safety or compliance related field.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  1. Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  2. Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  3. Knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations, equipment, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  4. Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
  5. Knowledge of uses of chemical and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
  6. Skill in verbal and written communication.
  7. Skill in instructing/teaching others.
  8. Ability to enter, track, analyze databases and develop rational and realistic conclusions based on relevant information to resolve issues brought to his/her attention.
